Simple Shell Headband

I love this headband! simple-shellI created this pattern as a quick, easy headband to sell at craft fairs. It works up in no time, but looks stunning and beautiful! Make a whole bunch for Christmas presents or just for yourself for the winter!

What you’ll need:

WW yarn (I used Red Heart Soft)

I hook (or hook to match gauge)

(2) 1” buttons (These add some character!)


As written in pattern

2 shells x 4 rows = 2.5”

Note: the gauge width is not as important as the height. This will determine length and subsequently, how it fits.

Fsc- foundation single crochet

Ch – chain

Sc- single crochet

Dc – double crochet

Shell- 2dc, ch 1, 2dc in same stitch


Beginning ch 3 counts as a stitch

Finished size of headband measures apprx 21” long x 3” wide. For longer headbands, continue to repeat R4. For shorter, omit a few R4 repeats


R1: Fsc 12 (alternately, you can ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across) Turn.

R2: ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (12)

R3: Ch 3 (counts as stitch), skip next 2 st, shell in next st, skip next 4 st, shell in next, skip 2 st, dc in last st. Turn. (2 shells)

R4: Ch 3, skip dc stitches, shell in next ch 1 space, skip dc stitches, shell in next ch 1 space, skip dc  stitches, dc in last st. Turn.

R5-29: Rpt R4

R30: ch 1, sc in each st and ch across. Turn.

R31: ch 1, sc next 2 st, ch 2, skip 2 st, sc next 4, ch 2, skip 2 st, sc last 2 st. Turn. (12)

R32: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch st across.

F/o and weave in ends.


Sew buttons on R1/R2 on 3rd and 4th stitches (making sure it lines up with your button holes from R32).
